Choose Homemade Helps Oklahomans Save Money While Eating Healthier

Eating healthy on a budget can be doable. Oklahoma Nutrition Information Education’s (ONIE) “Choose Homemade” campaign provides Oklahomans with practical tools and resources to prepare nutritious, budget-friendly meals at home. The campaign empowers Oklahomans to make the most of their food budget with easy grocery planning strategies, cost-saving ingredient swaps, and quick-prep recipes that fit into busy schedules.

With rising food prices, many families are seeking ways to stretch their grocery dollars. Choose Homemade offers realistic solutions to shop smarter, reduce food waste, and prepare healthy meals without breaking the bank, including:

  • Budget-Friendly Recipes: A diverse collection of FREE healthy recipes that are easy to prepare and easier on the wallet.
  • Grocery Planning Guides: Strategies to plan meals effectively, using all ingredients, and saving money.
  • Smart Shopping Tips: Advice on purchasing seasonal produce, buying in bulk, and selecting cost-effective ingredients.
  • Cooking Tutorials: Step-by-step guides and videos to enhance cooking skills and confidence in the kitchen.

“Our goal is to make healthy eating doable for all Oklahomans,” said ONIE Registered Dietitian Stephanie DeBerry. “By providing easy-to-follow recipes and practical shopping tips, we equip families with tools that will help them get a healthy meal on the table and make the most of their budget.”

The campaign also emphasizes the benefits of using staple foods like canned and frozen vegetables to save time and money. These shelf-stable options are typically pre-chopped, offering a time-saving, nutritious, and affordable way to meet the recommended 2-3 cups of vegetables a day. Choose Homemade also provides creative ways to incorporate canned and frozen vegetables into everyday meals. To make healthy cooking even more convenient, Choose Homemade features recipes that require minimal preparation and cleanup, catering to busy lifestyles. Additionally, the website offers resources in both English and Spanish, ensuring accessibility for a broader audience.
