Free Oklahoma Family Fun Events This Week: Part 1

Winter means cold days with less daylight. It can be hard to find the motivation to get out and do something, especially as a family. Luckily, there are plenty of Oklahoma family fun events happening all throughout January to get your new year started right!

Every Friday for the month of January, ONIE will be highlighting different family fun events in all regions of the state! Find something nearby or take the long way and make a road trip out of it! 

Free Family Fun Events: January 6th – 12th

Central Oklahoma

Jan. 3rd – Jan 15th: Origami Dice Games

Almonte Library – Oklahoma City, OK

Time: All day

Age Group: All ages

Event Type: Arts & Crafts

Visit Almonte’s creation station to make your own origami dice for some of the best dice games you can play anywhere, including a description of each game and instructions. 

Jan. 8th – Jan. 14th: Make Your Own Snowman Take-Home Kit

Capitol Hill Library – Oklahoma City, OK

Time: All day

Age Group: Kids, Teens

Event Type: Arts & Crafts

Make your own snowman charm with pony beads! Kit will include instructions, beads, and other materials for crafting this charm to keep winter with you all year long!

Jan. 12th: Family Art Night

Del City Library – Del City, OK

Time: 6:30-7:30pm

Age Group: All ages, Kids

Event Type: Arts & Crafts

Join for open-ended creation inspired by different artists and techniques. Children age six and younger should be accompanied by an adult. 

Northeast Oklahoma

Jan. 6th: Full Moon Guided Hike

Ray Harral Nature Park – Broken Arrow, OK

Time: 5:30-6:30pm

Age Group: All ages

Event Type: Hiking, Physical Activity

Explore the sights and sounds of Ray Harral Nature Park at night during a full moon. Will we hear the hoot of an owl? See the bioluminescence of a firefly? Let’s discover together! Visitors may register for a guided hike here or may enjoy a self-guided experience. The Nature Center will be open until 7:00pm on this evening. 

Jan. 6th: January First Friday x Goff Exhibition On View

Tulsa Artist Fellowship – Tulsa, OK

Time: 6:00-9:00pm

Age Group: Teens, Adults

Event Type: Arts & Crafts

Tulsa Artist Fellowship welcomes all to join for First Friday on January 6, 2023! Visitors are invited to experience our latest exhibition on view at Flagship, Bruce Goff: The Art of the Continuous Present, organized by the Goff Center of the Continuous Present (GCCP) and curators Lindsay Aveilhé and Britni Harris. In partnership with Flash Flood Print Studios, a unique papercraft of Bruce Goff’s Page Warehouse no longer standing in Tulsa will be available as a free takeaway.

Jan. 6th: Stargazing Tours at The Lodge

The Lodge at Sequoyah State Park – Hulbert, OK

Time: 6:00pm, 6:30pm, 7:00pm, 7:30pm, and 8:00pm

Sequoyah Adventure Club is now hosting Stargazing Tours at The Lodge every Friday night! You can sign up for a 30 minute time slot at the Lodge Front Desk or by emailing Recreational Specialist Mike at michael.robinson@travelok.com. Additional time slots may become available based on demand. 

Southeast Oklahoma

Tuesday – Sunday: Museum of the Red River

Museum of the Red River – Idabel, OK

A surprising gem of southeast Oklahoma, the Museum of the Red River in Idabel not only offers visitors free admission, but also an up-close-and-personal view of the museum’s reconstructed Acrocanthosaurus atokensis dinosaur, excavated only 12 miles from the museum. Escape the winter cold on a trip through the scenic southeast region by heading indoors for archaeological collections, American Indian artifacts and ethnographic art at this fascinating museum.

Western Oklahoma

Jan. 10th: Early Reader’s Academy – Big Adventures

Located: Lawton Public Library- 110 SW 4th St, Lawton, OK

Time: 10:00 am – 10:30 am on Tuesdays, January 3, 10, 17, 24, 31

Age group: Ages 3 – 6 & Caregivers

Event Type: Games, music

Adventures in early literacy through fingerplays, rhymes, stories, songs, & music. Thirty minutes of singing, talking, reading & moving.
